BROADCASTER and writer Jeremy Paxman will soon be seen on TV aboard SARA Lifeboat 1 ‘The Jim Hewitt’.

The team from Beachley took him out in the lifeboat to make part of a documentary about the River Severn. This is part of a new series called ‘Rivers with Jeremy Paxman’, which starts this Sunday (26th February) on Channel 4.

He and his film crew visited the SARA Beachley Station in September last year, and were taken out on the station’s two large boats.

A set of sequences was filmed under the two bridges and towards Oldbury, with another cameraman filming from on the slipway.

Mr Paxman was very interested in the work of the station, asking about the boat maintenance, the relative numbers of female crew and other matters.

Mervyn Fleming, Commander at SARA’s Beachley and Newport Lifeboat and Rescue Stations said, “It was our pleasure to host Jeremy and to be able to help with this film about the river we know so well.”

SARA is entirely manned by volunteers who are on standby all day, all year. SARA is not directly funded by any central or local Government agencies and depends completely on donations to fund its operations.
