After five years of planning and fundraising, the new Monmouth Skatepark and BMX Pumptrack was officially opened on Saturday 9th May, with the former Mayor of Monmouth, Councillor Jane Gunter cutting the red ribbon.

The project was set up five years ago after a public meeting concluded that building a £180,000 accessible skatepark would give the youngsters somewhere to use their skateboards and BMX bikes. Funds of £700 from Gwent's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Ian Johnston's Partnership Fund in 2013 helped with its initial fundraising.

Paul Harris, Deputy of the PCC said: "By supporting projects such as this one we hope to help towards reducing low-level crime and anti-social behaviour by providing a safe and fun place where young people can go. This is why the commissioner awarded the support funding to this project."

Shirley Hughes from MOSP said: "It was lovely to see so many people attend the opening to celebrate with us, especially people who have helped to get the project to this stage.

There are so many but to name just a few: CSO Joe Facchiano from Gwent Police who has been a tower of strength since day one; Bill Parnell and members of the Rotary Club of Monmouth for their continued support and advice; Diane Lee from Waitrose Monmouth; CC Alan Wintle and Tim Bradfield from Monmouthshire County Council who have given advice on all aspects of the site; Anna Toon from Hereford Skatepark who attended our first meeting in November 2009; and Russ Heideman from Wheelscape (originally from Monmouth) who worked alongside the young people to design the skatepark and also did a fantastic job orchestrating the afternoon's entertainment of demonstrations and competitions."
