Ten-year-old Jasmine Dorel will catch the attention of Chepstow Town Council tonight (Wednesday 22nd May) as it discusses a letter recently written by the young girl.

Jasmine has written to the council on the subject of her grandfather, Ted Dorel.

In her letter, due to be presented before councillors at their annual general meeting, Jasmine has asked that a plaque commemorating her grandfather's work be moved from its current position of a window in Chepstow's Gatehouse building (pictured).

Jasmine, from Shirenewton, writes: "The plaque mentions Mr T Dorel (my grandfather) re opening the arch in 1986. However, nobody gets to see this lovely plaque and its historic nature.

"I would be grateful if the plaque could be moved somewhere the public could see it, perhaps on the other side of the road by the walkway".

The Shirenewton Primary School pupil is also asking the council to consider updating the plaque to include the MBE presented to Mr Dorel in 2009 (pictured below) for 'services to local government and the community of Monmouthshire'.

"My grandfather did a lot for the council so I have written to them to surprise him.

"I made a fact file in school recently and I was allowed to write about anything I wanted. I wrote about my grandfather and it gave me the inspiration to write to the council."

86-year-old Mr Dorel served on Chepstow Town Council for 30 years before his retirement in 2008, as well being elected as mayor and representing Chepstow on Monmouthshire County Council.
