FROM an historical point of view the celebrations may be a couple of weeks early but Saturday's day of fun and drama to mark Henry V's resounding victory over the French at Agincourt promises to be another resounding success - and just as Henry did battle for one great cause, Agincourt Day will do the same for another - Children in Need.
For while the town marks the famous victory in a wide array of stunning re-creations of life as it was lived in the early years of the 15th century, a stealthy assault will be made on the pockets of its citizens as another, rather more modern, band of volunteers collect for this year's Children in Need appeal.
From mid morning to early evening the streets of Monmouth will be alive with the sights, sounds and smells of medieval times - join in as the recruiting troops march from Monnow Bridge, persuasively encouraging people to join Henry in what would prove a memorable victory at Agincourt.
Wander through Agincourt Square, mingle with soldiers gambling, swearing, making their presence felt, discover for yourself the realities of cooking and the grimmer realities of medieval doctoring!
And don't miss the only sitting you're likely to see of a medieval court - watch in amazement as the crime is tried, the defendant judged and sentenced, and the gruesome punishment is carried out!
For those of a more delicate nature, those who prefer to avoid the more vivid realities of life in times gone by, gentle entertainment will be provided with a display of medieval dancing at 3.15pm and there will be two performances of the Mummers' play - at 12.45 pm and 3 pm.
The day reaches its climax in the early evening with the dramatic reconstruction of Henry's siege of the castle. But be warned, it's an action-packed finale, full of sound and fury, and therefore not suitable for small children or animals.
The brainchild of the Monmouth Marketing Group and the Festival Committee, with the invaluable help of Bristol's Companye de Chivalrye, Agincourt Day will see the streets of Monmouth as they've never been seen before.
Join Henry's army for the day, swell the ranks and cheer him on as he routs the enemy. And if you don't fancy signing up, dig deep instead and give generously to a great cause. Be part of a great day out - it's certain to be a day to remember.
Please note that traffic in Monmouth town centre will be affected by Saturday's Agincourt Day celebrations.
