SIR,

What has happened to the elderly's choice and rights in Monmouthshire?

I am an elderly rate payer who lives in Monmouth and I need care to enable me to stay in my own home.

I recently received a letter from Monmouthshire Social Services telling me that in the near future my care provider would be changing.

I was absolutely astounded as I am extremely happy with my present care provider and don't want to change to anyone else.

Why would I when the care I receive is excellent and my carers are reliable, helpful and supportive?

I am worried that just because I am elderly, I have not been given a choice.

Maybe the motive of the powers that be is that if the elderly become too anxious and distressed they may die and not need the care at all, therefore releasing more money into the government budget.

I was under the impression that Monmouthshire Social Services followed a code of practice which advocates choice.

They have led me to believe that I have no choice.

However, I happen to know that I do have choice and my choice is to stay with the care provider that I am happy with and supported by.

I worry how many of my contemporaries have been given this impression.

This needs to be investigated by somebody who listens to the rate payers who are receiving this service; the rate payers who Monmouthshire County Council should be working for and not dictating to.
