IN the aftermath of the severe flooding that struck the lower part of Monmouth in the early hours of Saturday morning, Haberdashers’ Monmouth School has been supporting residents and organisations affected by the disaster.
Staff and the wider school community have been involved in practical relief efforts across the town.
“At a time when so many in our town are dealing with disruption and uncertainty, we are grateful that Haberdashers’ Monmouth School is in a position to help,” said Melvyn Roffe, of Haberdashers’ Monmouth School.
The school delivered clothes collected for the school swap shop to a local collection point, ensuring essential items reached families quickly. The school also provided support to Monmouth County Council in coordinating local relief efforts. On Sunday, staff assisted with clearing out Monmouth Day Nursery, whose ground floor was severly affected.
Nursery Owner Kane Gore said he was “extremely grateful” for their help.
Monmouth Day Nursery’s Pre-School children were accommodated at their new nursery setting at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School’s campus, which opened in September 2025. The children and their families were welcomed into the facility, providing continuity of care while the in-town nursery recovers.
“The flooding has been very challenging for our team, families, and the building, but our second setting at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School has made a real difference. I would like to thank those staff members who helped clear our affected nursery, as well as the catering team for accommodating our extra children at short notice. Their support ensured our Pre-School could continue safely without disruption to the children and their families,” said Kane Gore, owner of Monmouth Day Nursery.
Further assistance has been coordinated with Monmouth’s Town Council and local volunteers as the scale of need across the town has become clearer.
Cllr David Evans extended his thanks to the school: “Thank you for your visit and the very kind offer of the use of Mountjoy and helping hands to move the donations of clothing, bedding, towels and food from the church to Mountjoy.
“The students from Haberdashers’ that assisted us at the weekend were a real credit to the school and their enthusiastic approach to the task in hand was wonderful to see.”
Over the weekend, boarders from the school jumped into action to support community efforts in any way they could. In response to the growing need for coordinated storage and distribution, the school has now handed over the key to Mountjoy, a large school building that will be used by the community for storing cleaning products, equipment, and clothing, as well as sorting donations. The move has freed up other buildings across the town for other essential community activities.
Further assistance continues as Sixth Formers are helping pack and move supplies into Mountjoy, ensuring the space can be used effectively and immediately to support flood-affected residents.
Stagecoach Cwmbran/ Monmouth have also expressed their gratitude to the school for its support in the days following the floods. “a huge thank you to Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for rescuing us after the flooding,” the club shared.
The school offered temporary space on campus until Bridges Community Centre is able to reopen.
In addition to this direct support, Haberdashers’ Monmouth School is inviting its community to contribute to the Mayor’s Fund, which provides assistance to families, businesses, and community groups affected by the floods.
Friends of Monmouth Prep School are running a raffle, with prize donations including tickets to six nations rugby tournaments and two nights in London.
The school is also hosting a charity concert on Wednesday, November 26 at 7pm at The Blake Theatre, featuring performances from the Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Orchestra, String Ensemble, Habs Harmony, Four Nice Guys, Wind Chamber Ensemble, and String Quartet. All proceeds will go directly to the Mayor’s Fund. Alumni contributions are being collected at the joint alumni dinner on Friday, with donations also accepted via the link in the school’s bio.
Haberdashers’ Monmouth school remains committed to supporting the local community in practical ways as recovery efforts continue.
