Monmouth RFC welcomed visitors Bettws RFC for an early trial game last Saturday and gave a good account of themselves, even though three of the home forwards were more than double the age of other players on the pitch.
The 25-10 win provided an uplifting start under the captaincy of John Powell who led the way with a fine game in line-out and scrum but well supported by many fine individual cameos not least of all by Dave Morgan who shone throughout.
Dave Croudace led the scoring with 15 points including a determined try from 15 yards out, backed up by a try apiece from threequarters Jack Butler and Andrew Davies.
Bettws who came with a massive squad struggled in the set pieces but their fitness levels and good supporting play helped them cross the line twice by the final whistle, leaving everyone content with a good run-out played in a good spirit.
