Recent excavations close to the town boathouse in Monmouth have revealed an interesting find. Archaeologist Steve Clarke has been looking at a glass jar floor, dating back to between 1890 and the early 1900s, that has been unearthed where warehouses once stood on the riverbank. "The jars are mostly marmalade jars," he explained, "although there are some other clear jars mixed in with them, all mortared in to make a floor of some kind." The site is close to where his grandmother's house was, and where Steve used to go fishing as a boy. The foundation walls of the old warehouses can just be seen, giving a glimpse into an era long-forgotten when the riverside was host to an industry now no more. On the 1800s map, the glass jar floor is in the area where the letter 'R' is.
