THOUSANDS will have the chance to try a new mode of transport in Chepstow in August if plans for a giant water slide down the High Street are approved.

Discussed at the first public Chepstow Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday (27th January), it was announced that the National Diving and Activity Centre (NDAC) at Tidenham hopes to set up the 100m water slide for the August bank holiday weekend.

Organisers hope the slide will raise money for worthy causes and help promote the town.

The NDAC slide will be 15m longer than the one which proved such a hit in Bristol last year. Potentially up to 1,000 people per day will be able to book a place on the thrilling fundraising ride.

Directors and owners of the NDAC have agreed to fund the event to help raise awareness of the centre.

"The lane will be 100m long and we are looking to the local firefighters to provide the water to get racers splashing downhill when they line up to take the plunge," said Darren Bryce of NDAC.

Chepstow Town Council will consider the proposal at its monthly meeting tonight (28th January).

A chamber of commerce spokesperson said: "This sounds like a brilliant idea and a great way to get lots of people into the town."
