SIR,
Age Concern Cymru and Help the Aged in Wales, innocent and Sainsbury's are calling for knitters to join in The Big Knit this year to raise much-needed funds to help keep older people happy and healthy.
People across Wales will be supporting the UK-wide 2009 Big Knit campaign by knitting a target of 620,000 woollen items to sit on innocent smoothie bottles, squeezies and veg pots, from November 4th in Sainsbury's stores nationwide.
For each woollen-wearing product sold, innocent and Sainsbury's will give 35p to charity. Last year's Big Knit raised a record-breaking £250,000 for Age Concern nationally.
This year the focus is on healthy eating and healthy living projects. One in 10 people over the age of 65 suffer from malnutrition, and when it's cold outside, it's even more important for older people to look after themselves and make sure their bodies are in tip-top shape.
The monies raised from the Big Knit will be used to fund projects such as advice centres offering information on healthy eating, cooking clubs and get-togethers where older people can sit down and enjoy a meal in each others' company.
If you don't fancy knitting yourself, wool and needles can be donated to Age Concern centres.
For more information on the Big Knit call, Sarah Megson, on 029 20 431536.
