Former Monmouth School pupil, Daniel Llewellyn-Williams, was voted Best Actor at the Wales Theatre Awards in Cardiff on Saturday night.
He won the award for his role in Not About Heroes at Theatre Clwyd.
"Obviously I was delighted to get the award but I'm equally excited to be coming back to Monmouth with my one man show in March," said Mr Llewellyn-Williams.
The showman attended the boys' school in the 1990s before it offered drama to the boys. He said: "I had to go to the girls' school to do drama because it wasn't viewed as a legitimate subject in those days.
"I'd like people to see me and realise that they can go on to make a living out of the performing arts - it's not just a pipe dream."
Daniel will be in Monmouth next month performing his acclaimed new show 'A Regular Little Houdini' at the Savoy on Sunday 15th March at 7.30pm. The show is written, directed and performed by Daniel.
"I got sick of the bad press about Newport and decided I wanted to write something positive about the city. I was inspired by the tragic story of the Lyceum Theatre, knocked down in the 60s in order to build a dreadful 'modern' cinema.
"It was a travesty. If the theatre was still standing it would be one of the most important – architecturally speaking – in the country.
"There's a lot of history in the show. Houdini loved Newport because it was an industrial area. He chose it, and the Lyceum, as a springboard for his UK tour and I want to reflect his enthusiasm.
"Of course, I love the Savoy too. I used to walk past it every day and spent many happy hours in there."
