A 24-hour football marathon involving more than 200 players has raised more than £2,500 for Sport Relief.

The match, organised by Mike Tompkins, featured 265 players in total, with many more helping along the way.

It took place between 1pm last Saturday (24th March) and 1pm the following day.

"It wasn't about the game itself (but for those who care the Reds beat the Yellows 221-219) but it was definitely about bringing people, clubs and groups together to raise money for such a good cause," said Mike.

"I couldn't have done it without the support of Nick Butler and his excellent team at Monmouth Leisure Centre, who gave up their own time to work through the night and participated in the most entertaining hour of football, where the rules seemed to go out of the window.

"I would also like to say a big thank you Zoltan Becze, who supported me for most of the 24 hours and also Gabor Kis, 'Sam' Worrall and John Jones.

"I would also like to thank Rob Scotford and Matt Meredith of Monmouth Town's Kingfishers, who organised the participation of teams from all age groups (Under 6s to Under 14s).

"Over 100 kids, parents and coaches from the Kingfishers took part in the game and their generosity alone raised an incredible £600.

"I would also like to thank Ross Juniors and the parents and coaches who entered teams at all age groups between Under 7s and Under 14s and have so far contributed £400.

"It was great that other clubs also took part and I'd like to thank Becki at Wyesham Wanderers and Mark at Milkwall for organising teams.

"I can't name everyone I want to thank but a big thank you goes to everyone who took part and conributed to an incredible £2,000 raised on the day and a further £500-plus pledged through sponsorship.

"When I started planning this event I hoped to raise at least £1,000 so to reach £2,500 with possibly more to come is incredible."
