SIR,
While all the news this week has been about the poor facilities that our Commonwealth Games participants can expect, not much has focused on the preparation for the arrival of the Ryder Cup players and spectators.
This weekend, both Cardiff and Newport appeared to have 'major' roadworks in progress, at the castle in Cardiff and the railway station in Newport, both areas that would be attracting a lot of the visitors from both America and Europe.
Perhaps with four days to go it is a little early to start saying that we aren't ready to welcome our visitors, but with ambitious figures in the region of millions expected to be earned from the inflow of tourists, we do need to provide them with the best possible picture of our area.
But it all suddenly became clear as I was travelling back along the M4 from Newport to the Coldra, the 50mph speed limit is still in place on the motorway and no doubt this is a ploy to maximise on speeding fines from all the visitors who will be coming to watch the golf over the next few days – assuming that they have had the patience to queue at the Severn Crossing Tolls waiting to have their credit/debit card swiped.
So lets not just focus on Delhi, we have got similar problems over here and we don't appear to be doing much to encourage these visitors back again in the future. What a missed opportunity.
