A Monmouthshire nursery has picked up its 10th Gold at the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show with a uniquely bred species.

The family-run Penhow Nurseries has been breeding the species 'Diascia & Nemesia' for 25 years, with this particular hybrid strain in demand worldwide.

David Jones, one of the three family members who make up Penhow Nurseries, concedes it is the flowers' "wow factor" that keeps the judges coming back for more.

"No-one else does what we do," David said. "We've grown around 15 million new plants over the past 25 years to get to where we are now."

The species, originally sourced as a wild-flower from South Africa, boasts a whopping 800 flowers per plant, a vast increase from the 20 flowers on the original.

In all it takes three to four months to prepare for the flower show, from planting the bulbs to preparing the 'show stand', an art clearly perfected by the Jones family in their 16 years tenure at the Chelsea Flower Show.
