SIR

Last week a flood of water went streaming towards my father's house. Thankfully, his home was not flooded.

Unfortunately, other people were not so lucky. A few hours later I was contacted by several members of the community and sent pictures of the damage wrought to people's homes.

One gentleman pointed out that he was in temporary accommodation for the second time in four years due to the floods.

Last time he couldn't return home for four months. He said: "I'm happy here, but I'm not prepared to live somewhere where I will get flooded".

It is a disappointment that relevant organisations have not co-ordinated effectively and implemented the necessary precautions to safeguard people's homes.

Thankfully the floods have been met with solidarity in the community.

With public expenditure under pressure and organisations more fragmented than ever, the people of Monmouth should be proud that in hard times, they have each other.

Nevertheless, this health and safety issue must be rectified without delay.
