SIR, While shopping in Monmouth on Saturday it was brought to my attention that someone had tied a huge inflatable fish to the statue of Charles Rolls. I immediately went into the Shire Hall and spoke to a member of staff, I asked her to remove the fish pointing out that the statue was listed and that nothing should be tied to it. I also said it was disrespectful and would be very upsetting for members of the Rolls family should they see it. She refused to have it removed and I understand had given permission for it to be there for three days. I went home and made some calls to fellow councillors, asking them to lodge their complaints. In the meantime my husband managed to get hold of Roger Hoggins who was most helpful. I would suggest that Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) educate its Shire Hall staff on the importance of the Grade I Shire Hall and its curtilage which includes the statue of Charles Rolls. There were scores of tourists in town on Saturday and I, for one, was so ashamed of what MCC had allowed the BBC and others, to do to the Shire Hall building and the Rolls statue, it was nothing short of official vandalism. I might remind MCC that the town council and the people of Monmouth had a big input into the renovation of the Shire Hall and get very upset to see it being abused in this way. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Roger Hoggins for his intervention on our behalf. He is the most helpful county council officer at County Hall, even when he isn't on duty.
