SOUTH Wales Fire and Rescue Service have said the Blaenavon wildfire has been reignited and are now supported by specialist resources including aerial assistance from a firefighting helicopter.

Last night at approximately 10.50pm Gwent Police posted a statement on their social media to announce the closure of Cwmavon Road in Blaenavon due to the impact of a fire in Cwmavon woods, which had caused disruption. The road has since reopened with temporary lights controlling the flown of traffic. At roughly 1.15pm on Tuesday afternoon, SWFRS confirmed the wildfire had been reignited.

Crews remain at the scene, supported a firefighting helicopter which is expected to be operating from midday today, with firefighting efforts focused on containing the fire and protecting nearby properties.

Anyone affected by smoke is advised to follow public health advice and keep windows and doors closed where possible.

Members of the public are asked to avoid the area while emergency services continue their efforts to contain the fire.

They have asked for people to not fly drones over the incident ground, as this can disrupt firefighting operations and pose a risk to crews and aircraft.

As temperatures begin to rise again, they are urging everyone to think twice before using disposable barbecues or lighting any open flames near grassland and woodland areas.

Residents are also asked to remain vigilant for any signs of deliberate fire-setting. If anyone witness any suspicious behaviour, they should report it to Gwent Police by calling 101, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
