A MONMOUTH family has been “overwhelmed” by the support of the community after a huge project to transform their lives.
Charlotte Fairlie and her family were helped by over 100 volunteers and the DIY SOS: The Big Build team, and their new home was unveiled yesterday (Thursday 14th April) in what had been the biggest project of its kind that the show had attempted.
The nine-day project involved creating a two-storey extension at the family’s home on Hereford Road, with a dedicated physiotherapy room and ensuite wet room along with an extra bedroom for a live-in carer. With a deadline of Thursday morning, the team worked into the night to finish the ambitious project, and completed the finishing touches at 2.30am.
After suffering a massive stroke after giving birth to twin boys, Charlotte was given a one per cent chance of survival. Charlotte pulled through, but the stroke caused brain damage, partial paralysis and loss of speech.
Presenter of DIY SOS: The Big Build, Nick Knowles, unveiled the family’s home: “We can only do this programme with the help and support from you,” he said, addressing the crowd.
“We’ve got the best job in the world because we get to spend it with you guys.
“You’ve all done an amazing job.”
Rob Fairlie thanked the volunteers for their support, and described the family’s gratitude: “This is life-changing. We can start being a family and Charlotte can have the best physio to help with her recovery.
“We are overwhelmed, humbled and excited.”
The episode is likely to be screened early next year.
