On July 21st, Wye Valley Chamber Music returns to Treowen, Wonastow, for its annual Summer Residency. If you’ve not yet been to a concert at Treowen, now is the time to come along and find out what it’s all about. Concerts take place in the Banqueting Hall, a wonderfully intimate space for chamber music – you are up close with the musicians!

Internationally acclaimed Residency tutors Daniel Tong (piano), Krysia Osostowicz (violin), Robin Ireland (viola), and Tim Smedley (cello) will lead master classes with the Residency’s young ensembles and play alongside them in the concerts.

The concert on Wednesday, July 23rd, includes Grażyna Bacewicz’s String Quartet No. 4 - a dynamic, rhythmically driven piece displaying her distinctive Polish voice. Rebecca Clarke’s deeply lyrical Piano Trio follows, and the evening concludes with a performance of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor, a passionate and dramatic favourite, bursting with stormy fervour and tender lyricism.

The delightfully informal Open Day on Saturday, July 26th, starts with coffee at 11am, followed by masterclasses, talks and an afternoon concert. Lunch and refreshments throughout the day are included, which really adds to the enjoyment of sharing wonderful chamber music with new and old friends.

The Open Day afternoon concert includes Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E flat, K493, Clarke’s Viola sonata, Bridge’s Fantasy for Piano Quartet and Britten’s String Quartet No 2.

Treowen Manor, NP25 4DL, is in Wonastow, near Monmouth. Concert parking is opposite the entrance to the house, half a mile down the drive, with parking for those with mobility issues close to the house. For directions, see “How to find us’ on www.treowen.co.uk.

Tickets for the Wednesday concert are £20 (students £5), whilst the Saturday Open Day tickets, which must be booked in advance, are £55 (students £20).
