LAUGHTER will be raising the roof of Monmouth’s Savoy Theatre with top comedians lined up for upcoming gigs.
Whirlwind, FitBit-breaking comedian, presenter, actor and author Russell Kane will be winging in on Friday, October 23, with his unique recipe of sharp wit and “storming physical comedy”.
Russell will have two of the best rising stars in UK comedy in support as well.
Four times nominated at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards, he won the Best Comedy Show award in 2010, and his television hits include Big Brother’s Big Mouth (2007), I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here – Now (2009–2011), Freak Like Me (2010), Geordie Shore: The Reunion and Britain Unzipped (2012), Live at the Electric (2013), and Stupid Man, Smart Phone 2016).
He also hosted the BBC Radio 4 series Evil Genius in 2018 as well as a television show by the same name on Sky History in 2023.
And he’s recently turned his hand to Shakespeare, playing the lead in Romeo and Juliet in a radical retelling of the Shakespeare tragedy, that casts the couple as a pair of love lorn 40 somethings.
”Romeo and Juliet is basically a comedy trapped inside a tragedy. It’s all funny until Mercutio gets stabbed. The first three acts are pretty much a rom-com,” he told Metro.
When asked if he was initially interested in a role in the New Vic Theatre production, he said: ”Before you suggest Bottom or Puck or Malvolio or any of the other funny parts, I don’t want to do that. I want people to go, “Oh my God, I did not expect you to do that.”
Also on his way to the Savoy is Spanish/South Walian Ignacio Lopez in his stand=up show Nada on Sunday, November 22.
The star of Live At The Apollo, Have I Got News For You, QI, Richard Osman’s House of Games and Comedy Central Live has put together a captivating comedy experiment which sees ‘Spain’s best export’ create a brand new, “completely unique and blisteringly funny stand up show right in front of your eyes, from absolutely nothing”.
Mining his upbringing, growing up in Mallorca and South Wales (where he attended the International Film School Wales in Caerleon), as well as suggestions from the crowd, Ignacio crafts an intricate story of mystery and suspense packed with sarcasm, silliness and huge laughs.
And he’s followed on Saturday, November 28, by award-winning comedian, actor and writer Omid Djalili, who is internationally renowned for his electrifying live performances.
The Have I Got News For You and The Omid Djalili Show TV star has also appeared in numerous films, including Gladiator, The World Is Not Enough, Notting Hill, Grow Your Own, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and Sex and The City 2, and starred on stage as Fagin in Oliver, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof and King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar.
One reviewer said: “Sharp, fearless and endlessly entertaining, his stand-up combines brilliant storytelling, cultural insight and infectious energy, making every show an unforgettable experience.”
