MCS pupils celebrate outstanding results

At Monmouth Comprehensive School, there were smiles of joy and relief as students collected their examination results.

The school increased its overall pass rate at five A* - C to 99%, the highest on record. Students achieved a fantastic 98% pass rate in the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification.

The qualification is made up of a range of examinations and portfolio work, examining students’ skills, attitudes and knowledge across a wide range of learning aspects.

Amongst the overwhelming majority of students who achieved superb results, there were students who achieved the highest grades across their subjects:

This year, following a long tradition of success, no student left without a qualification. The school is fully comprehensive and is able to meet the needs of students and support them in leading their lives.

Records broken at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools

Focus and determination paid off as pupils celebrated outstanding GCSE and IGCSE results at the Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools.

Records were broken at HMSG, where 94.8% of girls achieved A* to B grades and 40% of candidates gained 10 A* to A grades.

The A* to A rate was 74.3% and 30% of girls were awarded seven or more A* grades.

Two girls, Katie Davies and Amelia Livingstone, both achieved 11 A*s and a distinction in additional maths.

Amina Arif, who gained 10 A*s, is well on her way to realising her dream of becoming a psychiatrist.

She said: “I’m over the moon.

“My brother Anse, who is at Monmouth School, got 11 A*s last year so the pressure was really on”

And five Welsh rowers at the School, who took part in this year’s home internationals for Wales, national schools and Henley for HMSG, gained 29 A*s and 17 As between them, highlighting the connection between sport and academic success.

One of the team, Josephine Frankel, achieved 10 A*s.

“Rowing teaches you what it means to work hard,” she said.

“It teaches you time management, commitment and those skills really help when it comes to exams.”

Mrs Caroline Pascoe, Headmistress at HMSG, said: “We were delighted for the girls and so proud of them for getting the School’s best ever A* to B rate. The commitment and hard work of pupils and staff certainly paid off this year! The results were excellent across the board including the more challenging IGCSE papers which we now undertake in science, history and Chinese. I was particularly pleased to see the strong correlation between the dedication required to compete at a national level in rowing and achieving excellent exam results. Fitness of body equals fitness of mind.”

At Monmouth School, 30% of boys achieved 10 or more A* to A grades and there were 14 pupils, in the cohort of 89, with eight or more A* grades.

Matthew Crane, who was pivotal in a project to recreate a true-scale version of Monmouth School in online game Minecraft, was awarded 11 A*s.

He said: “I haven’t been this excited for a while – I’d prepared myself for worse results but this is the best possible outcome by a mile.

“There is honestly no substitute for revision and hard work. I studied for up to six hours a day at Christmas time and then upped it over Easter leading to exams.

“If you get your head down, you can do it.”

Matthew hopes to study computer science at university in the future.

Another four boys, James Baker, Will Hall, Calum McIntosh and Henry Morgan were awarded at least 10 A*s.

Budding football star Dan Taylor, who plays for the School’s 1st team, is celebrating nine A*s and an A grade.

At Monmouth School 36.2% of all grades were A*s, with 84.4% of pupils gaining A* to Bs.

Headmaster Andrew Daniel said: “Following our outstanding A level and AS level results last week, today we can celebrate the very strong GCSE results achieved by Monmouth School. No less than 27 boys were awarded 10 or more A* or A grades. The GCSE results are a great reward for these pupils, given their diligent work to prepare for the examinations.

“With almost two thirds of all grades awarded at A* or A, our boys are very well prepared indeed for success in their future studies. I would particularly like to commend this year group for the impressive academic progress that they have made, under the careful guidance of our expert teaching staff.”
