MONMOUTH Druids took the short journey to the Forest of Dean to face Bream RFC looking for their first victory of the season.

Facing a side which contained the young and the not so young Monmouth won much of the early ball possession. Their bigger pack of forwards gained a steady stream of ball from which local taxi driver and fly half Simon Williams kicked repeatedly to keep Bream penned in their own half.

From a line out Monmouth got in a concerted drive which resulted in lock Mattie Edwards being awarded a try. This was converted by Simon Williams to open the Monmouth scoring account.

Towards the end of the first half Monmouth made their first substitution. Flanker Doug Allen, playing his last game for the Club, was replaced by Paul Scourfield.

Almost immediately Monmouth scored their second try through flanker Andy Williams. This was again converted by Simon Williams to make the score 14-0.

In the second half centre Andy Griffiths was replaced by new face Paul Downing. This was Paul's first game for six years but he showed some promise and offers much for the future.

Monmouth then scored their final try, again through Simon Williams who intercepted a Bream pass to run in from 30 metres. He added the conversion to push the score to 21-0.

The Druids were completely in control and a further score through a Simon Williams penalty goal made the final score 24-0. Even another substitution - Craig Nicholas for Mark Ralph - failed to allow Bream an opportunity to breach the Druids' defence.

A first victory with the forwards' superiority denying Bream success. New fly half Simon Williams was man of the match, but he will have more difficult battles ahead.

Next Saturday the Druids face Usk and this promises to be a much sterner test. Team Manager Ron Paul will hope to encourage his team to victory.

The Druids team were: Steve Finn, Dave Morgan, Andy Griffiths, Paul Downing, Ben Smith, Richard Jones, Simon Williams, Ian Jeffs, Andy Scourfield (Capt), Andy Williams, Doug Allen, Paul Scourfield, Paul King, Mattie Edwards, Mark Ralph, Matt Ricketts, Mark Higgins and Bato Symonds.
