Having beaten Newport High School Old Boys (NHSOB) at home in January by 24 points to 10, the Druids were quietly optimistic about the return fixture.Last week's heavy defeat in Risca was a shock but the circumstances of the defeat did not unduly affect the Druids. In gloriously sunny weather, the use of substitutes and a liberal supply of water was going to be important. As in January, NHSOB fielded a big pack which the Druids would have to cater for. Early play saw the Druids put pressure on the home side. The Druids backs, with good passing and support play, were threatening. The Druids took the lead through a combination of luck and opportunism. The ball was moved across the three quarter line to centre Dave Brace.Seeing his way blocked by defenders, he chipped over the advancing defenders. The ball bounced awkwardly over the Newport try line as only a rugby ball can and Dave Brace following up his kick by diving on the ball for an unconverted try.Druids wing Mike Whistance was put away on the left but lacked a bit of pace and the covering defence just kept him out.So at half-time the Druids held a five-nil lead as both sides fought for supremacy.
