Regulars at a Monmouth pub raised a staggering £3,700 during a charity drive for good causes.
The Green Dragon held an auction evening as well as a raffle and quiz for three charities, Cancer Research UK, and the Stroke Association UK. Although the Air Ambulance was chosen as a third charity, only representatives from the other two charities turned up, so the money will be split equally between those.
Margaret Cleaves, landlady of the Green Dragon is looking on this as her swan song as she is due to retire very shortly so was pleased that her regulars pulled out all the stops to raise such a magnificent amount. Even the two charities benefiting from the fund-raising could not believe how much had been raised.
As Margaret explained: “We have a bonus ball every week and £25 of that is put aside for charity which helps the final total”.
Auctioneer Rob Escott stood in as auctioneer for the evening and Jane Gunter also put a mighty effort into making sure the quiz went well.
Cancer Research UK has a visual presence in the town through their shop in Agincourt Square and Mandy Bartlett, usually found working in the back room steaming the clothes, came down to pick up the donation from Margaret, saying that the money will help their Cardiff-based cancer research facility with their pioneering research.
The other half of the money will go to help two Monmouthshire Stroke Association charities, the Phoenix Project and the Life After Stroke Service.
The Life After Stroke Service support all stroke survivors up to a year post-stroke, after which they are referred to the Phoenix Project, who also accept self referrals as well as referrals from family members or health and social care professionals.
Representatives Lauren Heath of the Phoenix Project and Louisa Stokes from Life After Stroke were grateful for the money donated by the Green Dragon pub-goers.
Both groups can be contacted through the stroke.org.uk website.
