A DISCO at Bridges Community Centre has raised more than £1,000 for charity.

Supporting London Marathon runners, Lisa Bailey and Diane Smith, the disco raised £1,176 for Bridges and MACS, a group that works with children born without, or with severely underdeveloped, eyes.

Lisa and Diane will be running at the London Marathon next month and event organiser Debbie Hutchinson decided to donate the proceeds from the disco to the pair's chosen charities.

Joining a new runners club a little over a year ago, Lisa had almost no running experience at all. Now though, she has completed both the Cardiff and Newport half marathons with improving times all the time.

Having got the running bug, Lisa also has 5k and 10k runs lined up after the marathon.

Diane got into running in the same way, by joining a new runners club a year and a half ago.

She is running for MACS because of her work as a paediatric nurse in the past and has seen the devastation that a child born with no or little sight can cause.

Because there is no foetal detection, the shock can be huge, something Diane has experienced as her son was born partially sighted.

Having completed the Severn Bridge, Cardiff and Newport half marathons, Diane is stepping up to the London Marathon to help mark a significant year, both in terms of birthdays and her wedding anniversary.

With a 70s/80s theme, the disco was a huge success with all 172 tickets selling out within two weeks. Monmouth's Fancy Fred's also offered a 10 per cent discount with each ticket and Debbie brought in long-term colleague DJ Pete Stead to organise the music.

Pete decided that if he was returning to his home town, he should fish out his original set list from when he started out 40 years ago. Pete brought back the show which he toured the area with in the 70s and and contacted fellow Soundtracker Roadshow members Terry Cleaves and Paul Meredith for a comeback evening.

With the public's imagination captured and a social media frenzy, there was great feedback from those who went along and some fantastic outfits.

For anyone who has got the disco bug back, a similar event is being held at Lydney Town Hall in October and at Bridges again in November with a disco, funk and soul night.
