SIR,

My mother (wheelchair bound) and I have followed the proposals for the redesign of Monnow Street on shared space principles with great interest and were much looking forward to their implementation.

At present it is extremely difficult for me to negotiate the pavements with my mother – and virtually impossible at the pinch point.

We are therefore dismayed that the trial has been abandoned - presumably because motorists have protested, seeing it only as an infringement of their right of way.

We would urge some compassion for other users of our main shopping street, especially those that are no longer as nimble footed as they once were, and trust that the decision will be reconsidered taking into account the needs of all.

Ms J Hutley and Mrs T Hutley
