A MONMOUTH man is to take on a boxing challenge next month in Cardiff to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Dean Palmer is taking part in the Ultra White Collar Boxing event in Cardiff on 19th November after being nominated for the event by his girlfriend, and is raising money for a charity close to his heart.

Dean is currently settling into his eight-week training regime, and the well-known face around Monmouth is up for the challenge after recovering from a knee injury.

The event is all in aid of Cancer Research UK, a charity close to Dean’s heart after his aunt passed away around 10 years ago.

Dean has an active role at Monmouth Town FC, having previously played in the first team and now manages the reserve side. Having never tried boxing, he is up for the challenge.

He said: “Because of an injury I haven’t played football recently.

“It’s all very, very new to me but I can’t wait for it.

“The first training session was honestly the hardest thing I’ve ever done but I’m three weeks in now.

“It’s not what I’m used to, it’s been a real eye opener.”

Dean is currently three weeks into his eight weeks of training, and will start sparring in a week. As part of the event he has help looking after his diet and has physio sessions to make sure he is prepared.

With weeks to go until the event Dean has currently far exceeded his fundraising target. He was set the target to raise £100 and sell 20 tickets but has currently raised £900. He is also hoping to have four tables at the event with both Dean and his partner’s families and friends from the football club.

“I would like to thank everyone who has donated so far,” he says. "I have been completely overwhelmed."

Anyone who would like to sponsor Dean or book a place at the event can visit his JustGiving page or donate at Overmonnow Garage in Monmouth.
