A Llandogo man will be setting off to Rwanda on Sunday, 30th September to train the country's school teachers.
62 year-old David Rutter, who taught at Monmouth Comprehensive for four years, will be working with Canadian charity Tools for Schools, who help to develop schools across Rwanda.
The retired math teacher will be put to work in the country, training local teachers who often volunteer in the schools with little to no training.
"As a teacher, retirement age is 60," said David. "A lot of teachers are in the position to do things like this".
This is not David's first charitable trip over seas, having travelled to India in 2009 with Operation Raleigh, helping students to build a school.
The volunteer will be in Rwanda over October and November, travelling around the county spending a few weeks in each destination.
Despite the country's turbulent past, including the notorious genocide of 1994, David is positive the country has changed for the better.
"A lot of people feel that Rwanda is a dangerous place but apparently it is a really positive place now. I don't think my family will be worried, they will be glad to get rid of me".
David has been supplied with some math equipment from his old school to take out to Rwanda.
He will be setting up a blog online for people to monitor his progress on his travels. Keep a look out in the Beacon next week as we get the website's details.
