A CYCLE ride from Paris to Magor is set to push Ruby to her £40,000 fundraising target. Her dad Antony Atkins, along with three close friends, will start in Paris and cycle 300 miles to Magor over four days. Ruby was born prematurely at 30 weeks and was diagnosed last year with bilateral cerebral palsy, meaning her ability to walk unaided is restricted. Family, friends and the community have rallied behind Ruby to help fundraise for the tot who needs Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) treatment, an operation currently not funded on the NHS. The surgery involves entering the spinal cord via a vertebrae and cutting the portion that carries messages from the brain to the legs. Combined with physiotherapy the treatment will enable Ruby to walk unaided. Cyclists will set off from Paris tomorrow (4th September) and ride up to Caen, France, where they will catch the overnight ferry to Portsmouth. They will then ride through Salisbury, Bath and across the Severn into Wales. Fundraisers are expected to arrive in Magor late this Sunday afternoon (7th September) Team Ruby will need to cycle for eight to nine hours every day in order to reach their overnight stopping points. The challenge has been sponsored by Monmouthshire companies who have each made a donation to Ruby's cause. The finish line is Undy Athletic Club where there will be a funday for Ruby starting at 1pm. There will be bouncy castles, football competitions, a raffle, 'splat the rat' and a barbecue. Local band the Minty Squirrel will be performing live. Antony said: "The bike ride event has raised just over £5,000 and will take us to our overall target of £40,000. "The funday will also be our last public event and a chance for us to personally thank so many people that have helped us achieve this phenomenal task in just over 10 months." Ruby's parents will be meeting with the SDR team at Great Ormond Street at the end of November. "If they are happy with everything then we hope to start discussing dates," Antony said, "realistically we are possibly thinking March or April of next year."
