When 52-year-old cyclist Rebecca Comins, of Caldicot was knocked off her cycle and killed during a time trial on the A40 between Raglan and Abergavenny in 2022, police investigated the scene of the collision for clues as to what happened.
They launched an appeal for witnesses who were driving on the road prior to the collision, which happened during a Monmouthshire Wheelers time-trial race.
Rebecca was just nine minutes into the time trial with a group of other competitors when her ride was cut tragically short.
With the van driver under arrest and facing serious questions, Sergeant Cath Raine of Gwent Police was called in to investigate the final moments of the cyclist’s journey. But the collision happened on a concrete road, with barely a trace of evidence on its surface.
So when she finally discovers a clue at the edge of the carriageway, it raises more questions than answers.
You can see her forensic approach on BBC 1 tonight at 7pm as part of the 5th series of ‘The Crash Detectives’.
Rebecca, who worked for the Aneurin Bevan Health Board, won the women’s title in the Cardiff 100 Miles TT 15-mile cycling time-trial on the same stretch of road in February.
Cyclists had been taking part in a race after meeting at 7pm at the Hardwick restaurant lay-by in a bright, sunny Thursday evening in June 2022.
The 47-year-old man from the Abergavenny area, named later as Vasile Barbu was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for four years.
The full story can be seen in Crash Detectives: The Last Ride – at 7pm tonight on BBC One Wales, BBC Two England, and BBC iPlayer.
