SIR,

With reference to the headline in the Beacon of 21st

January, I was very surprised to read the comment of the

Mayor with regard to obstructions on pavements caused

by shopkeepers.

Considering the Town Council have seen fit to install

large plastic containers in the middle of the footpath in a

number of locations (and spending thousands of pounds

in the process).

It does not seem to be fair to attack shopkeepers,

who bring business to the town, for doing what the

Council does with apparent impunity.

Are we to expect the County Council to order the

removal of these unsightly containers – somehow I do not

think that will happen. So is there one rule for the Town

Council and another for hard-working shopkeepers?
