A CONCERT and auction has raised thousands to help three-year-old Ruby Atkins to her feet. Nearly 200 people gathered at Dewstow Golf Club last Saturday (16th August) to twist and shout to Beatles classics sung by the Beat Goes On, a Beatles tribute act. Chris Lee who portrays John Lennon said the event was a huge success. "We saw the press coverage around Ruby and we wanted to do something to help", he said, "We're a relatively new band but draw in a good number to our shows so we like to help local charities as much as possible. "We contacted Rachael Atkins (Ruby's mum) via Facebook to see if we could help raise funds for Ruby's appeal. "As three members of the band have young families, we hope that people would help us out if we were in a similar situation and that's the main reason we offered our services to Ruby's appeal. "We're estimating that we raised somewhere around £3,000 plus at the event." The auction was run by special guest, Olympic medalist Jamie Baulch who donated a signed Leigh Halfpenny jersey along with a signed Bradley Wiggins Tour de France yellow jersey. Ruby's dad, Antony Atkins, said: "The night was attended by nearly 200 people and with the success of the auction, we are now within touching distance of our target. "Next up is our bike ride from Paris to Magor. To coincide with our return and to celebrate hopefully reaching our £40,000 target, the committee of Undy Athletic Club are helping us put on a funday for Sunday 7th September. "There'll be a football competition, bouncy castle, face painting, candy floss stall, barbecue and live music. "Best of all, entry is free." Ruby Atkins was born prematurely at 30 weeks and diagnosed with bilateral cerebral palsy, meaning her ability to walk unaided is restricted. Ruby is in need of an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) treatment which would reduce spasticity in her legs. Combined with physiotherapy, the treatment will enable her to walk unaided. To donate to Ruby's cause, visit: http://www.justgiving.com/rubyAtkins">www.justgiving.com/rubyAtkins
