Monmouth Town Council has made its recommendations for the projects that will receive 106 funding for their schemes. 106 monies are a levy on each house built to make the extra housing sustainable to the local community and it is this fund that is to be used for community projects with £439,574 available from the three completed housing projects; the Almshouses site, the former Wyesham School site, and Croft y Bwla. 21 applications were received by Monmouthshire County Council (MCC), who asked Monmouth Town Council for their observations and to score each project on its merits. The successful applications were as follows; Monmouth Off Street Project £100,000; Wyesham Community Woodland £21,000; Gateway Monmouth Project, £50,000; Monmouth Cricket Club practice nets, £18,000; Wyesham Scouts outdoor area, £15,985; Monmouth RFC floodlights, £30,000; Drybridge Nature Park improvements, £18,525; Tudor Road play area, £70,000; Monmouth Petanque Club floodlights, £9,962; Osbaston playpark, £21083. The only project that the town's planning committee thought unworkable was the suggestion of a new larger playpark on Chippenham, built closer to the larger car parks, making it more accessible to mums and young children. The idea was to build just one park for the whole of town and to improve disabled access and parking rather than face the costly upkeep of many smaller playparks in the area. However, MCC's proposal failed to gain a recommendation by the town who suggested to spend that proposed £85,000 allocation for refurbishment of the existing area close to Monmouth School. The final decision on the award of grants will be made by Monmouthshire County Council's cabinet on 4th June. Ian Morgan and Martin Newell of Monmouth Cricket Club were there to hear the good news about their £26,500 proposal to convert one of the redundant tennis courts and improve facilities for younger cricket players by providing cricket nets. Ian Morgan, vice-chairman of the club said: "We were the second-highest rating project in the list of applications according to the county council. "These are very exciting times for everyone involved with the cricket club, including the 80 boys and girls in our junior section. "We are delighted with the news and want to thank Steve Watkins and Lee Herring from Cricket Wales, the town council, Mike Moran, Monmouth Sports Association and Mike Turner MBE and all those who have supported our aspirations."
