Usk County Councillor Tony Kear and newly elected Monmouth Town Councillor Martin Newell are working together, to explore and research mutual ways of enhancing their respective towns through coordinated floral initiatives.
Both Councillors share a strong belief in the power of green spaces and floral displays to enrich the local environment and contribute to the well-being of residents. By pooling ideas and highlighting how coordinating volunteer efforts can clearly demonstrate how vibrant and sustainable floral schemes across their communities as well as leading to enhanced civic pride and community engagement while drawing in visitors.
Councillor Tony Kear, known for his previous 9 years leadership in Usk’s award-winning “Usk in Bloom” initiative, is enthusiastic about extending the success of floral projects to neighbouring communities. “Usk has a long-standing tradition of horticultural excellence for over 40 years, winning Wales and Britain in Bloom titles as well, as becoming World Champions in 2018. Being at the coal face of volunteering and historically part of the Wales In Bloom Committee, I have seen first-hand across the whole of Wales, how working together as a community, with businesses, Councillors and volunteers can attract visitors and improve greater economic prosperity. I’ve been impressed how Cllr Newell has reached out and his enthusiasm to improve Monnow Street in particular. By sharing ideas, hard work and research I have seen success follow” Said Kear.
Councillor Martin Newell, recently elected to Monmouth Town Council, is equally committed to revitalising public spaces through flowers and greenery. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity, as part of my research, to sit with Tony and also see first-hand in Usk how coordinating enthusiastic volunteers with existing groups can make a difference. The aim is not just to beautify by floral impact , but also to boost the environment via mix of bee friendly displays and strengthen our communities by encouraging locals to get involved. It’s about making Monmouth an even more inviting place to live and visit which is what my doorstep discussions with residents highlights is needed . I’d like to see Local businesses, schools, and community groups being encouraged to participate in a similar way to Usk and hope to inspire others to take an active role in maintaining and enhancing the natural beauty. I look forward to sharing my findings with my fellow Town Councillors in Monmouth in due course”
