A PROJECT which has been set up to tackle food waste - the county’s first Community Fridge - is now open.

Users can obtain food which has been donated by local supermarkets which is being given away free to those who need it.

The bright orange door of Monmouth Community Fridge is opening at Unit 4, in the Bridges Centre stables.

Set up by Food Sense to tackle food waste, the Community Fridge will offer - for free - surplus food, within its use by date, which would otherwise be destined for landfill.

Commercial-grade fridges and freezers will be stocked with surplus food donated by local supermarkets.

The food will be stored safely and hygienically, meaning it’s good to eat!

Food Sense, which is part of Transition Monmouth, has been distributing unchilled food within the community for a couple of years.

The group wanted to make surplus food available to more people and to be able to provide chilled and frozen food.

With a donation and support from Monmouthshire County Council and premises from Bridges, the Community Fridge was born.

The Community Fridge is part of a countrywide charity Hubbub which has just celebrated the opening of its 100th fridge.

Social distancing will be observed with one person at a time entering the Community Fridge.

Masks will need to be worn and antiseptic gel will be provided.

The Community Fridge is open daily and anyone is welcome to come along, meet the volunteers and collect food from it.
