The Rolls of Monmouth golf club had a hole lot of fun while raising life-saving funds for Meningitis UK.

The club chose to give £4,500 towards the charity's pioneering preventative vaccine research after the lady captain Sally Ward's daughter fell ill with the disease.

The £9,000 total, which was raised at the club's fun day, was also split with St David's Foundation Hospice Care.

Club captain David Guppy said: "It was a real pleasure to have so much fun with so many people while making a significant contribution to two great charities.

"Because meningitis has touched our lady captain in a personal way and Meningitis UK is very much a charity focused on looking for a vaccine, it appealed to us."

The fun day was supported by individuals and local businesses in October when members held a golf day, and auction with guest speaker, Tommy David, a Welsh Rugby Union player in the 1970s.

Meningitis UK's head of development, Kate Rowland, said: "Everyone at Meningitis UK is so grateful to everyone who gave so generously at the fun day.

"It sounded like an event which brought the community together for two great causes.

"As meningitis strikes so quickly and the symptoms are notoriously difficult to diagnose, our charity believes preventative vaccines are the only way to protect future generations.

"We fund pioneering research projects across the country to help stop this disease and save lives in the future."
