SIR, May I speak up for the clinicians working at 'the sharp end' of our embattled health service? We all know that there are significant problems with our NHS, but if my recent experiences are anything to go by, they are certainly not in Monmouth. My 89-year-old mother was released from hospital in Gloucester just before Christmas, and came to stay with my wife and me over the Christmas period in order to recuperate. Unfortunately her condition worsened, and we had to register her as a temporary patient at Chippenham Surgery. From the very first telephone call that I made I received nothing but kindness, positivity and help from the staff at the surgery. I think I must have spoken to just about every receptionist there, and every one of them without exception did their utmost to facilitate a difficult situation, even lending us a wheelchair to help in transporting my mother to the surgery. When this was no longer possible we received two home visits from a GP. Perhaps best of all, I telephoned the Overmonnow Day Hospital to enquire about a walking frame, to be told that one of the physiotherapists lived in Welsh Newton and would deliver and fit one on her way home, which she did - the same day. So the next time I watch yet another horror story about the NHS unfolding on the news, I will remember the professionals in our town who are working at the NHS's point of delivery, and who did so much to help my Mum.
