THE fifth annual Apple Day will be held on Sunday 19th October at the Drill Hall, Chepstow.

There will be many varieties of beautiful locally grown apples on sale at lower than supermarket prices.

With an exhibition of over 50 different varieties of apples, the local expert on apple varieties Mike Porter, of the Marcher Apple Network will be on hand to identify any apples brought in, that tree in the back garden may be an old, rare or even important example of one of the 2,000 or so apple varieties that grow in the country.

Local ciders and single variety apple juice can be tasted and bought.

There is plenty of apple fun to be had with prize competitions and activities for both children and adults.

A major feature of the day is the apple cookery competition with two first prizes of £50, second prizes of £30 and £20 for both sweet and savoury dishes containing apples.

The Drill Hall is delighted that Chris Harrod the proprietor/chef of Crown at Whitebrook who has just been awarded a coveted Michelin star will be judging the competition.

Entry forms are available at Chepstow Museum, Chepstow Library and the tourist information centre.

If you have apples of your own to juice or make cider from there will be an opportunity to use an apple crusher and juicing press, just bring apples and a suitable container for fermentation or storing the juice.

The Apple Day is organised by Chepstow Town Council and Transition Chepstow, who between them have planted over 200 apple trees in the town to create community orchards.

Anyone who makes or bakes anything to do with apples and wishes to take part or have a stall selling produce should contact Ned Heywood on (01291) 624836

The Apple Day is open from 11am to 4pm and admission is free
