Alfie, 'the Chepstow Cat', has died.

Sad news to all in Chepstow, the small black cat was a well-know figure.

Very often he could be spotted receiving a stroke from a passing pedestrian, and was the first sight to all driving into the top of town.

Alfie has been a constant sight outside Chepstow's Merrick's pharmacy since moving to the area in 2003.

Despite often being thought of as a stray, he was in fact a family pet, and chose the corner to catch some sun and get plenty of attention.

The cat, born in 1994, had seen a long life and had gathered quite a fan base. Well over 3,000 people have been following the little cat's activities on his own Facebook page.

Worried messages had begun to appear from fans wondering where their little friend was.

A message on 8th February from the page's creator warned that Alfie was feeling the cold and yesterday (Tuesday), the following message was released on the site:

"It is with great sadness to say that Alfie passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with his family this morning, Tuesday 12th March 2013 in his 19th year.

"He will be sorely missed by them and many others. Rest In Peace Alfie x."

The statement has been met with an outpouring of grief, with around 300 people leaving messages of sadness and condolence.

A wake has been organised for Alfie at 3pm at the Coach and Horses pub on Welsh Street.
