Important changes to NHS dental care in Wales have come into effect from 1st April 2026.

These changes are part of a new NHS dental contract introduced by the Welsh Government focusing on preventative care and clinical need, rather than routine treatment for all patients.

As this contract has not been piloted and has been introduced with limited preparation time, both patients and dental teams should expect an adaptation period while new systems and ways of working are implemented.

Routine scale and polish is not automatically included with your check-up.

Key charges include: Urgent care: £37.50; New patient assessment: £27.21; Recall appointment: £25.00.

Dental practices do not receive increased funding, despite collecting these fees.
