PICTURED is the latest rescue at Monmouth’s Society for the Welfare of Horse and Ponies (SWHP).
Chance was reported to SWHP on 1st May by a member of the public who saw that she had fallen into a sink hole on Llangynidr mountain. Her mother was nowhere to be seen and she had a gash on her head and was exhausted.
The walkers who chanced upon her managed to free her and took her home in their car. Having no knowledge of horses they found a neighbour with a baby bottle and fed her with some warm water which she guzzled down, they kept her warm and went about trying to find help.
After trying other charities, the walkers called SWHP who were happy to take her in. Chance was made comfortable on her arrival, and at less that one week old when she came in, she will continue to be fed every three hours day and night by the charity’s dedicated staff until she becomes stronger.
The pluckly little pony had a set back last week with the scabs lifting off her head and hocks to leave significant holes, exposing bone. She was taken to Abbey Vets where she was immediately treated. These holes were caused by bruising leading to haematomas from falling into the sink hole.
A spokesperson for SWHP said: “With a bandaged leg, antibiotics and some TLC, Chance is not giving up and still being a cheeky monkey. She continues to drink her milk and is still making great progress.
“For those who kindly offered a foster mum, this is partly why we have been unable to take the offer. The risk of infection is simply much too great.
“We have been inundated with requests of how supporters can donate. Every feed Chance has cost £1 which doesn’t sound much but she has nine feeds each day and will be fed milk for at least 16 weeks, this will be over £1000 in total. So please if you can donate even the cost of a single feed for Chance we would be so grateful!”
