A Monmouth centennial event is being held in James Square this Sunday (October 3) to commemorate Monmouth War Memorial being brought under the stewardship of the Mayor of Monmouth.

Research from a Monmouth resident who wanted to add a name to the memorial earlier this year, discovered that it was entrusted in perpetuity to the Monmouth Town Mayor and the corporation, a predecessor organisation to the town council.The war memorial situated in St James Square was presented to the Mayor of Monmouth on October 6, 1921. One-hundred years on, Monmouth Town Council have organised a service to re-dedicate the war memorial to the town which will take place on Sunday October 3 at 1pm.Road closures will be put in place at 12 noon.Sea and Army Cadets and CCF gather on the cobbles of Shire Hall; veterans, scouts, cubs and the public gather at the war memorial at 12.30pm.Cadets will step off from cobbles and line the parade route, as they did in 1921, with 2 Sea Cadets and 2 Army Cadets to stand at the corners of the war memorial, mayoral party to muster on cobbles outside Shire Hall with standard bearers at 12.40pm.The mayoral party will start off, led by standard bearers at 12.45pm. The procession will then arrive at war memorial with cadets following. Cadets will then fall out and get into position by the memorial. The mayor will then lay flowers on the war memorial on behalf of the town.A commemorative service commences led by Rev Bethany Willers, Mayor’s Chaplain will then take place at 1pm.Once the service finishes the mayoral party will parade back to Shire Hall led by standard bearers. Members of the public will be invited to lay their own flowers at the end of the service.The streets which will be closed for the ceremony will be Monk Street, A466, St James Square, St Marys Street, St James Street, Old Dixton Road at junction with St James Square and Whitecross Street to its junction with St Mary’s Street.
