A close battle was fought by Skenfrith, Whitecastle and Grosmont castles in Cross Ash Primary School's recent Eisteddfod.

Pupils delighted the judges with their recitations, singing, art work, cookery entries to name but a few activities.

They dressed up in Welsh national costumes, some were miners, rugby players, daffodils and there was even a visit from the famous Tom Jones!

The competing choirs each sang "Calon Lan" to conclude the competitions.

Skenfrith castle emerged victorious at the end of the day and the castle captains were presented with the prestigious Eisteddfod shield.

Flying the green flag at Trellech Primary

At Trellech Primary School children, staff and parents are working hard at being green, from composting and growing their own vegetables to saving energy and recycling as many materials as possible. These are just some of the changes that can be seen all around the school.

The driving force behind this is the Eco Committee, which is made up mostly of children from each year with guidance from some teachers and parents.

The Eco Committee has been running for two years now and in that time has achieved its Bronze and Silver status in The Green Flag Award Scheme.

It uses incentives to get all the children in each class to take responsibility for that class's energy use and recycling. Each week the classes are graded and an Eco Cup (made from recycled materials) is awarded to the class with the most points. If one class comes out on top for a month it is awarded a certificate.

The children take being green very seriously and this has a big impact on the community as they are all very keen to apply these values in their own homes.

Trellech Primary School is currently applying for its Gold Award, if it achieves this it will win the coveted Green Flag to fly outside the School.
