Monmouth Carnival has announced its prizes for this year’s costume parade (Sunday, June 26).

Whilst this year’s carnival will no longer have the traditional street procession, organisers have quadrupled the first place prize money being offered for the best costumes.

First place winners of the three confirmed costume categories will now in line to win £200. The three categories are: individual participants, group entries, and unmotorised wheel entries - for example, decorated prams or wheelbarrows.

Second place price money is yet to be confirmed, but is expected to be between £50 and £100.

Last month carnival organisers decided to permanently retire the annual parade down Monnow Street. This was in part due to rising insurance costs, and health and safety procedures. Additionally, organisers found that putting focus on the family fun day, now on the Chippenham Playing Fields allowed more people to enjoy the various events which the carnival had on offer, including circus acts, gymnastics performances and John Kidley’s coal antique steam tractor.
