Maria Callas Winner brings Polyphonic Play to St Briavels Fresh from her triumph in Athens, where she was to top prize winner at the Maria Callas Grand Prix Competition 2008, Mei Yi Foo, the celebrated Malaysian pianist will give a recital for St Briavels Music on Saturday, 22nd March at 7.30 Mei Yi calls this programme Polyphonic Play. It is a series of contrasts. Bach and Shostakovich will start the programme with different takes on Preludes and Fugues. Then there is music by Ligeti, famous for his scores in HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Kubrick"">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Kubrick" \o "Stanley Kubrick" Stanley Kubrick films HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odys">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odys sey_%28film%29" \o "2001: A Space Odyssey (film)" 2001: A Space Odyssey, HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shining_%28film">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shining_%28film %29" \o "The Shining (film)" The Shining, and HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyes_Wide_Shut"">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyes_Wide_Shut" \o "Eyes Wide Shut" Eyes Wide Shut and his pupil, the Korean composer Unsuk Chin. Finally, there are two French contrasts, the preludes of Messiaen (with his obsession with birdsong and colours, which Unsuk Chin takes up) and Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin, set of six pieces written in memory of his friends who died in the 1914-18 war, but in a style reminiscent of Couperin's baroque. However whimsical the programme sounds, we know, because she played for us a little over two years ago, that this is going to be a gripping evening. Mei Yi Foo was discovered when she was at the Yamaha Music School in her native Malaysia. She went on to play concerts for the King. Still a child, she was sent to study at the specialist music department of Wells Cathedral School where she was taught by Michael Young (now of St Briavels) and met many of the musicians who subsequently became regular performers in the Wye Valley. Completing her formal studies at London's Royal Academy of Music in 2005, she is now a bright star on the international concert scene as a soloist and chamber musician. Later in 2008, she will be playing right across Europe and Russia, as well as Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. The concert, part of the "Pro-Artist" series, is at St Briavels Church and tickets, at the door, are £15 or £5 for students and school children.
