In 2003 Usk Conservative Club was without a steward and was struggling to survive, when salvation arrived in the form of Bob and Annette Burton, who, having retired as licencees of the Greyhound Pub, were persuaded by the then chairman Brian Strong, to come to the club _ Bob as steward and Annette to provide the excellent cuisine for which she had been famed at the Greyhound.
Last Saturday, (19th January) 10 years to the day from when the Burtons arrived at the club, members filled the bar to pay tribute to the decade-long loyal service which Bob and Annette have given to the club.
Trustee and life member Margot Etheridge presented them with a certificate in recognition of their service to the club, and Annette received a bouquet of flowers from another trustee, Sarah Byford.
Club chairman Roger Gallatley thanked Bob and Annette for their invaluable contribution to the succes of the club – in reply Bob pointed out that the five years he had signed up for had somehow turned into 10 and that he and Annette had enjoyed their time there.
He also said that they intended to be around for a while yet – something all members are extremely glad about.
Alison, the deputy steward, then showed her appreciation by presenting Bob and Annette with a bottle of Champagne.
