MOTORBIKE riders, cyclists and drivers are being invited to help shape future road safety improvements by sharing their experiences of using local roads.
Monmouthshire Council has launched a survey to better understand the challenges and opportunities road users encounter across the county.
Feedback will help identify locations where improvements could enhance safety and inform future investment decisions.
It comes after several tragic accidents on local roads in recent years, where motorcyclists lost their lives or were seriously injured.
In May 2024, a 20-year-old motorbike rider died in an early evening collision with a Fiat Panda car on the B4293 road at Lydart, between Monmouth and Trellech.
A 63-year-old former SAS soldier and Falklands war veteran also died in hospital after a mid-morning collision in April 2025 with a Land Rover on Groesenen Road near Raglan Garden Centre.
A local 63-year-old woman admitted causing death by careless driving earlier this year and received a suspended jail term and a driving ban.
Just a month after that accident, and only a couple of miles away, a 27-year-old motorcyclist from the Kent area died in another crash on the Raglan southbound A40/ A449 slip road
That followed a crash three years earlier on the Raglan slip road which left a Swedish duo badly injured.
BBC One’s The Crash Detectives revealed last year how their BMW R 1250 GS Adventure bike sent out an automated SOS call when it careered out of control, enabling 999 responders to rush to the scene.
The rider and passenger were too badly injured to respond to a call from BMW's emergency centre after the bike detected the impact, but the latter were able to pinpoint the machine's location through GPS and alert Gwent Police.
A Monmouthshire Council spokesperson said of the new initiative: “Motorcyclists experience the road network differently to many other users, navigating rural routes, busy junctions, changing road surfaces and varying visibility conditions.
“By hearing directly from riders, the council hopes to gain valuable insight into how roads are used and where targeted improvements could have the greatest impact.
“While the survey has a particular focus on motorcyclists, the council is also keen to hear from drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and anyone who regularly travels through Monmouthshire.
“Every response will help inform future road safety measures.
“Funding secured through the Welsh Government's Regional Transport Grant will support improvements to key areas of the highway network, with survey responses helping to shape priorities.”
Cllr Catrin Maby, Monmouthshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Environment, said: "We know that people experience our roads in different ways, and we want to hear those experiences first-hand.
“This survey gives motorcyclists and other road users the opportunity to tell us about the routes they use, the challenges they face and the improvements they'd like to see.
“Your feedback will play an important role in helping us make our roads safer and more accessible for everyone.”
“The survey only takes a few minutes to complete and will provide valuable insight into how people travel around the county.”
