Gwent Police is urging residents to be wary of bogus callers following reports of suspicious callers in the Monmouth area. The bogus callers have targeted elderly and vulnerable people claiming they are from the waterboard. Police are reiterating the following advice and steps people can take to try and ensure they do not become the victim of such a crime: *If you don't know the person at your door, don't let them in until you have checked their identity. *If you have a door chain – use it until you confirm the person's identity. *If you don't have a door chain think about getting one fitted (contact The Bobby Van on 01633 245202) *Never let anybody into your house unless you are sure they are genuine. If they are genuine workers they will be carrying identity cards. Don't assume just because a caller is wearing a uniform or clothing with a badge or logo, that they are genuine. *If you are engaging in conversation with them outside your house, then make sure your back door is locked. *Report any suspicious people or suspicious vehicles to police. *Do not accept any other telephone number offered by the caller (it may belong to an accomplice) *Consider using an agreed password with your utility company. You can check if the caller is working for Welsh Water by calling freephone 0800 281 141 Remember - if in doubt, keep them out. If you have any concerns about suspected bogus callers please contact Gwent Police on 01633 838111.
