WAITROSE in Caldicot successfully nominated Bee Friendly Monmouthshire for their Community Matters Award 2015.

Chairman of Bee Friendly, Alan Michie, said, "We are absolutely delighted to be the recipients of the Waitrose Community Matters award for 2014/15.

"This was awarded for our success last year in raising awareness of the need to plant more flowers that attract and help the insect population, and at the same time making the Monmouthshire countryside a more pleasant place to live.

"There is still much more to be done and this money will enable us to double our efforts to spread the word about the plight of the pollinator across Monmouthshire; encouraging householders, farmers and landowners to adopt more bee friendly practices as set out in the bee friendly promise – to provide pollinator-friendly flowers throughout the year, giving places for insect pollinators to live, and avoiding the use of harmful chemicals, herbicides and insecticides.

"If we all do this it will reverse the decline in native pollinating insects which play a vital part in the food chain.

"Some will also be directed to educating the younger generation and encouraging each member of the community to grow more pollinator friendly plants."
