A cancelled wedding day at an Usk hotel is being transformed into a magical ball in aid of a children's charity.

Becky Drew, of Chepstow, had booked the Glen Yr Afon Hotel for her wedding, but decided things were not working out with her partner and that, at 23, she was too young to go through with it.

After talking with friends Keeley Laverick and Becky Lythgoe, and with advice from hotel staff, Becky decided she would still have her dream evening, albeit one with a twist.

My Big Phat Ball was born – an evening of fun and fundraising featuring a magician, DJ, photography courtesy of Giggleicious and a photobooth.

As the event was formed around Becky's dream day, the three friends thought it "only seemed right" to choose the Make a Wish Foundation to benefit, "so that children with life-threatening illnesses could have their wishes come true."

The charity grants magical wishes to some of the 20,000 or so children in the UK with life-threatening illnesses.

Wishes include being a princess for the day, seeing a musical, going on a special family holiday and meeting a favourite popstar.

Becky, despite having no experience of organising events, threw herself into the new challenge, visiting local businesses for support, rounding up raffle prizes and selling tickets.

Keeley, who works at Bulwark Junior Youth Club and runs the Little Steps group for young parents at Central Kaff in Chepstow, has been bringing family and friends on board to help and assisted Becky with her eye for detail.

Becky Lythgoe, a training co-ordinator at Cleanstream Carpets, has also been helping to publicise the event, which takes place on 2nd September at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £40 per person and tables are available for up to 10 people. For more information go to mybigphatball.com or call Becky Drew on 07894717446.
